Missed Out onYour Preferred Care Provider?

Discovering you’re pregnant is a whirlwind, and one of the first big decisions is finding the right care provider for your journey. In British Columbia, the competition for midwifery care is no joke—securing a spot can feel like trying to grab tickets to a sold-out concert. But if you didn’t get your preferred provider, don’t panic! There are still amazing options to ensure you feel supported and cared for during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

In BC, midwives are covered under MSP and can be your primary care provider during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. But here’s the deal: they fill their spots almost instantly. You don’t need an official pregnancy test from a walk-in clinic or family doctor to apply—midwives only require a positive home test.

Pro Tip: Research midwifery practices in your area, find the ones that resonate with you, and apply ASAP—like the night you see those two pink lines. The sooner you reach out, the better your chances of securing care.

Can’t Get a Midwife? Add Yourself to Their Waitlist

If the midwives in your area are fully booked, ask to be placed on their waitlist. Spots may open up later in pregnancy due to cancellations, new midwives to their team, or changes in circumstances.

Being on the waitlist gives you the chance to switch to midwifery care even if you initially start with a family doctor or OB.

Consider Postpartum Midwifery Care

Even if you can’t secure a midwife for your pregnancy, you can still benefit from their postpartum care services, which are also covered under MSP. This includes support with:

  • Basic lactation support

  • Home visits in those first days/week postpartum

  • Recovery after birth

  • Newborn care and questions

  • Longer appointments and up-to-date evidence based care

Reach out to midwifery practices for postpartum-only care. It’s a great way to receive specialized support during the crucial first six weeks after birth.

Hire a Doula for Comprehensive Support

When your preferred care provider isn’t an option, a doula can step in to offer the personalized, continuous support you need. Here’s what doulas bring to the table:

  • Continuity of Care: Unlike medical providers who may rotate shifts, your doula is a consistent presence throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

  • Personalized Support: We take the time to get to know you through your long prenatal visit in your home, and are available for questions or reassurance via text, email, or scheduled video calls.

  • In-Labour Presence: Doulas provide virtual support 24/7 during early labour, and hands-on support during active labor, offering comfort measures, advocacy tips, and encouragement when you need it most.

  • Resource Network: Need referrals for prenatal education, lactation consultants, bodywork, counseling, or local support groups? We’ve got you covered.

A doula is your steady guide through pregnancy and birth, ensuring you feel seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.

You Have Options—And We’re Here to Help

While missing out on your preferred care provider can feel disheartening, you still have plenty of options to create a meaningful and supported pregnancy experience. Between waitlists, postpartum care, and doula support, you’re never alone in this journey.
