FAQs

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. We help families navigate their birth journey, offering personalized care that meets your unique needs.

Our doulas have trainings including:

  • Doula Canada

  • DONA International

  • Bebo Mia

What’s the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula?

A birth doula supports you through pregnancy and labor, providing continuous care during childbirth. A postpartum doula, on the other hand, focuses on helping your family transition after birth, offering guidance on newborn care, emotional support, and practical help as you recover.

When should I hire a doula?

For birth doula support, it’s ideal to hire as early as possible to establish a strong relationship and have continuous support through pregnancy. For postpartum doula support, booking before your birth ensures we can be available for you once your baby arrives, though we can often accommodate later bookings.

How can I book postpartum support if I don’t know when my baby will be born?

No need to worry! We recommend booking your postpartum doula support in advance, even without knowing the exact birth date. Once your baby is born, we’ll adjust the schedule to accommodate your needs. Our services are flexible to ensure you receive support when you need it most.

Can I hire a doula if I’m having a cesarean birth?

Absolutely! Doulas support all birth types, including planned and unplanned cesarean births. We help prepare you mentally and emotionally, and we're there for you in the recovery process as well.

How does a doula support me during labor?

Your doula will provide physical comfort measures like massage, positioning suggestions, and breathing techniques. We also offer emotional reassurance and help you advocate for your choices, ensuring you feel informed and confident during the process.

Will a doula replace my partner’s role during birth?

Not at all! A doula works alongside your partner, helping them feel confident and involved. We provide guidance so your partner can be the best support for you. We're there for both of you.

Does a doula provide medical care? Are they the same as a midwife?

No, a midwife is a medical professional who provides clinical care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, including prenatal check-ups and catching babies. A doula, on the other hand, provides non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support. Doulas work alongside midwives (or doctors) to help ensure you feel supported, comfortable, and informed, but they do not perform medical tasks. Think of us as your guide and advocate through the birth and postpartum experience.

How do I know which doula is the right fit for me?

Choosing the right doula is a personal decision. The best way to find your match is by having a complimentary consultation where you can discuss your needs, preferences, and values. Pay attention to how comfortable you feel with the doula, their communication style, and whether they respect your birth or postpartum goals. Trust your intuition—when you feel heard, understood, and at ease, you've likely found the right doula for you!

What kind of births do The Valley Doulas attend?

We attend all types of births! Whether you're planning a home birth, hospital birth— planned cesarean section, an unmedicated or medicated birth— a doula provides support for your specific birth choices. We’re here to help you feel informed and supported no matter the setting or circumstances of your birth.
